TRAVELER CONFIDENCE RISING SO BOOK NOW WHILE PRICES ARE LOW

A recent report found that reduced hotel rates and airfares have led to increased travel intentions for the summer season. Travelocity's first Traveler Confidence Report indicates travelers do intend to jump on all the deals that are available. More people intend to travel and fewer people are postponing vacations. Travelers are budgeting the same or more for summer travel and have been encouraged by lower airfare and hotel rates.

MACNAIR TRAVEL PREPARED FOR SECURE FLIGHT CHANGES TO AIRLINE RESERVATIONS

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced that beginning May 15 the Secure Flight passenger vetting program began asking passengers to enter their name - as it appears on the government issued identification they will be traveling with - when making airline reservations. In the near future, small differences between the passenger's ID and the passenger's reservation information (such as variations in middle name or middle initial) will not be an issue for passengers. Travelers should begin making sure that their government issued ID and travel information (including names on frequent flyer accounts) match.

The second phase of Secure Flight begins August 15, 2009 when passengers will be required to enter their date of birth and gender when booking airline flights. MacNair's online profile system is already capable of receiving this information.

Once Secure Flight's advanced technology is fully implemented in early 2010, enhanced watch list matching will be done by the government. Airlines will be required to gather a passenger's name, date of birth, and gender when making an airline reservation to determine if the passenger is a match to the No Fly or Selectee lists. By providing the additional data elements of gender and date of birth, Secure Flight will more effectively help prevent misidentification of passengers who have similar names to individuals on the watch list and better identify individuals that pose a known or suspected threat to aviation. TSA's goal is to vet 100 percent of passengers on all domestic commercial flights by early 2010 and 100 percent of passengers on all international commercial flights by the end of 2010. CUSTOMER SATISFACTION RISES AS AIRLINES CUT CAPACITY

For the first time since 2003, passenger satisfaction with airlines improved, according to the University of Michigan's American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). Passenger satisfaction was up three percent to 64, ending a downward slide that, with few interruptions, began in 1994. Although passenger satisfaction is up, airlines remain one of the lowest scoring businesses in ACSI. American Airlines fell three percent to 60. Southwest continues to lead the industry for a sixteenth straight year, up three percent to an all-time high of 81. United Airlines anchors the bottom, unchanged at 56. Airlines with the biggest customer service problems in the past improved the most. Continental is up ten percent to 68 and US Airways is up nine percent to 59, both erasing last year's declines. Delta improved seven percent to 64 after its merger with Northwest, while Northwest itself remained near the bottom of the industry at 57, just ahead of United. HOTELS FIND TOUGH TIMES MAKE TRAVELERS MORE WASTE-CONSCIOUS

Frequent travelers have become waste-conscious, according to Element Hotels' new Eco-Travel Index, which tracks frequent traveler's "green" travel habits. The study found that nearly 78 percent of respondents said they are paying more attention to wasteful habits like leaving the lights on, leaving the TV on, or leaving the faucet running. But more than 41 percent say their vigilance about squandering resources is due to the economy, while just 28 percent claim it's due to the environment. Their eco habits slip on the road, with nearly half (46 percent) saying they always recycle glass and plastic at home, but just 36 percent do so on the road. At home, more than 34 percent say they limit shower time or lawn-watering, but only 20 percent watch water consumption while traveling. Only about one-third of travelers surveyed consider themselves outstanding in their personal "green programs," with most feeling more like "green beginners." (Source: Element press release)
